ANTERIOR CRUCIATE LIGAMENT REHABILITATION

The Anterior Cruciate Ligament (ACL) is one of 4 major ligaments in the knee joint and the main stabiliser. It is commonly injured when taking part in sports that involve twisting or jumping and landing such as skiing, football and netball.

Treatment options range from surgical reconstruction or repair of the ACL to  conservative physiotherapy with exercise rehabilitation and sometimes the use of a knee brace. The ACL is one of the most widely researched injuries and the best treatment for ACL injuries  includes good quality exercise rehabilitation. At Pure Physio we are knee and sports specialists with many years of experience diagnosing and treating ACL injuries. We work closely with you and local Orthopaedic Consultants to help you achieve the best outcome.

We provide the following treatments for ACL injuries:

Before operation exercise rehabilitation – research shows at least 5 weeks of intensive exercise rehabilitation helps improve the outcomes of the operation.

After operation exercise rehabilitation – from early after the operation through to return to play, the recovery process after ACL reconstruction or repair takes approximately a year. Doing the right exercises at the right time ensures your recovery progresses at the right rate. We ensure you are fit to return to sport or personal goal by performing a series of supervised physical tests.

Non operation exercise rehabilitation – sometimes the best treatment option is conservative physiotherapy management. When this is the case, we work with you to strengthen and stabilise the knee by providing you with 1:1 comprehensive exercise rehabilitation.  We ensure you have exercises you can perform independently either in a gym or at home.

For everyone with an ACL injury we work 1:1 with you using the latest exercise equipment in the gym at Applemore Health & Leisure. We ensure you are able to keep progressing even when not with us, by teaching you  how to perform your rehabilitation  programme independently in a gym. We will also adapt your programme, so you can do your rehabilitation exercises at home.

BEFORE OPERATION REHABILITATION

Research shows undergoing a period of exercise rehabilitation before having an operation such as knee and hip replacement, ligament reconstruction and cartilage surgery can improve recovery afterwards. We advise completing 6 weeks of exercise rehabilitation before your operation, which will help to get you in the best shape possible.

Rehabilitation appointments are available as 30 minute or  60 minutes options, but we strongly advise 60 minute appointments to get the most out of your session.

AFTER OPERATION REHABILITATION

Whether your goal is to return to playing sport or to be able to walk upstairs, rehabilitation is essential for restoring strength and mobility after orthopaedic surgery. Operations such as joint replacements, ligament reconstructions or cartilage surgery all benefit from high quality rehabilitation to restore you to your best.

Once we have performed an initial assessment we will work with you to determine the best treatment plan. We will also work closely with your Consultant to ensure your recovery is as smooth as possible.

With access to the latest fitness equipment and swimming pool at Applemore Health & Leisure we deliver effective post-operative exercise rehabilitation. We will also tailor your exercises so you can do them anywhere. Where appropriate we may also use additional techniques such as soft tissue therapy and manual therapy to help your recovery.

Rehabilitation appointments are available as 30 minute or  60 minutes options, but we strongly advise 60 minute appointments to get the most out of your session.

EXERCISE REHABILITATION FOR CANCER

There is strong evidence showing exercise rehabilitation helps to reduce the unwanted side effects of cancer treatment such as fatigue, pain, nausea, weight gain, osteoporosis and depression. The research also shows exercise improves quality of life, fitness and survival of cancer patients, with mortality reduced by 50 per cent, 40 per cent and 30 per cent in bowel, breast and prostate cancer respectively.

Being health care professionals and exercise specialists, we at Pure Physio are able to assess your level of function and fitness and devise an exercise rehabilitation programme which is suitable for your stage of recovery either before or after cancer treatment.

Depending upon your fatigue levels exercise rehabilitation can be delivered for either 30 minutes or 60 minutes.
